Falling in Love with The Dutch!
Kayak adventurer Jim Payne has faced many challenges on waterways around the world, but this time he’s falling in love with the Dutch people. The appeal began when, as an American teen hitchhiking in Europe over 50 years before, he experienced a remarkable act of kindness in a park in Amsterdam. He now returns for a long-distance, solo kayak voyage on the Rhine River.
As he tackles this famous waterway, dodging massive freighters and meeting nautical crises, Jim also explores the culture. He makes side trips to visit windmills, church services, local craft, art and drama shows, and is invited into many homes.
All this experience reveals remarkable qualities of patience, kindness, and maturity in this surprising little country. As he puts it, in fostering healthy human relationships, “the Dutch seem to be a generation ahead of the rest of the world.”
Jim Payne started his kayak adventuring in 1996, at the age of 57. The voyage of In Dutch—Again! is the 15th of his long-distance solo trips, which have included adventures in England, Chile and Holland, as well as on many U. S. waterways including the Mississippi, Columbia, Ohio, and Hudson rivers.
